Biological characteristics of Telenomus alecto and Trichogramma galloi reared on eggs of the sugarcane borer Diatraea flavipennella Rev. Bras. entomol.

Diatraea flavipennella (Box) (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) is one of the most destructive pests in sugarcane plantations in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Developmental characteristics and parasitism potential of the egg parasitoids Telenomus alecto Crawford (Hymenoptera, Scelionidae) and Trichogramma galloi Zucchi (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) were compared with the aim of selecting a suitable species for biological control of D. flavipennella. Both T. alecto and T. galloi developed well and were readily adapted to D. flavipennella eggs as host. Although, T. galloi presented higher viability, with more adults emerging per host egg and higher sex ratio, the developmental period (egg-adult) was shorter in T. alecto and female longevity was extended. Citrus rootstocks influence the population densities of pest mites Ciência Rural
Silva,Rafael Rocha da; Teodoro,Adenir Vieira; Vasconcelos,Jéssica Fontes; Martins,Carlos Roberto; Soares Filho,Walter dos Santos; Carvalho,Hélio Wilson Lemos de; Guzzo,Elio Cesar.
Citrus are attacked by pest mites such as the citrus rust mite Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) (Acari: Eriophyidae) and the spider mite Tetranychus mexicanus (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae). However, little is known on citrus rootstocks influencing pest mites. We aimed to evaluate the influence of rootstocks on population densities of pest mites on the sweet oranges 'Pera CNPMF D-6' and 'Valencia Tuxpan' throughout time. Adults of both mite species were monthly counted during 19 months from June 2011 to February 2013. Rootstocks influenced the populations of pest mites, since lower densities of P. oleivora were found on 'Pera CNPMF D-6' sweet orange grafted on the hybrid TSKC × CTTR - 002 and on 'Swingle' citrumelo in comparison with the hybrid LVK ×...

No evidence of coconut stem bleeding disease transmission by bark beetles in Brazil Ciência Rural
Guzzo,Elio Cesar; Neves,Jhonatan David Santos das; Santana,Samuel Farias; Negrisoli Junior,Aldomario Santo; Teodoro,Adenir Vieira.
ABSTRACT: Stem bleeding disease, caused by the fungus Thielaviopsis paradoxa is one of the most important diseases of coconut palm Cocos nucifera worldwide and some insect species have been found in association with T. paradoxa infected coconut palms. The present research investigated whether coconut palm-infesting bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) could disseminate stem bleeding disease. Adult bark beetles collected from coconut palms presenting stem bleeding symptoms were inoculated in PDA culture medium. Results showed no germination of the fungus T. paradoxa from either cuticle or digestive tract of bark beetles. Thus, we found no evidence that bark beetles carry viable spores of T. paradoxa that could infect healthy coconut palms...

Seasonal variation of pest mite populations in relation to citrus scion cultivars in northeastern Brazil Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Silva,Rafael Rocha da; Vieira-Teodoro,Adenir; Martins,Carlos Roberto; Carvalho,Hélio Wilson Lemos de; Santos-Silva,Shênia; Pimentel-Farias,Adriano; Guzzo,Elio Cesar.
Abstract Pest populations in a given agroecosystem may be influenced by several abiotic and biotic variables, including the host plant cultivar. We compared the population fluctuation of pest mites in twenty citrus scion cultivars grafted on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia). Adults of citrus rust mite Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Acari: Eriophyidae), Texas citrus mite Eutetranychus banksi and Tetranychus mexicanus (Acari: Tetranychidae) were monthly counted in each scion cultivar from April 2011 to February 2013 in Sergipe state, northeastern Brazil. Larger E. banksi population peak was recorded on sweet orange 'Valência Montemorellos' in February 2012 compared to the other cultivars and larger populations of T. mexicanus were found on sweet orange 'Lima' in...
